These two lovely young ladies "followed us home" last Monday! I'm trying to use that excuse! hehehe There was a Guernsey dairy dispersal sale fairly close to us last week and so we went. Beautiful weather, good food and friendly folks... What more could you want? We were hoping to come home with a young heifer to train up like out wonderful Dolly cow. Well, somehow we seemed to have ended up with two 'not so little' darlins! Dylan is only a year old, so she'll just hang around and be a pet for a while. Dottie is a coming 2 year old and may be bred to a Guernsey bull. The new girls are settling in nicely. Dylan was being raised as a show heifer so she is extremely gentle. Dottie is halter broke but not used to being messed with very much, so she is our challenge. We have been working with her since her arrival. She is starting to gentle down and decide that being petted is not really so bad - especially if there's food involved! We think they will make very good cow mommas and milkers when the time comes. Dolly cow isn't quite sure what to think of them yet. We keep telling her she will always and forever be the queen cow on the place. :)Guinea hen with her keets
Thursday morning I woke up to one of the guinea hens showing off her new babies.. all 17 of them! We knew she had been setting for a while but we didn't expect to have her hatch that many. I watched her for some time to see how she would care for all of them. Sure enough by mid day she was dragging them through the tall grass and loosing them left and right. I promptly gather them all up and started putting together a pen where they'd be safe and warm.
As we were working on the pen, we noticed more keets appearing! Unknown to us we had two more setting hens... wondered what had happened to them. Before the day was finished, we ended up with 40 keets in the pen under lights. They sure are cute!
And just some more random pictures around the place.. Enjoy!
